The Solanaceae are a family of plants that includes tomatoes (see separate web page), eggplants, bell peppers and chilies. As is the case with the majority of vegetables, Solanaceae grow rapidly with relatively short cycles. High yields mean that these crops are among the most demanding in terms of their instant requirements for nutrients.
The daily requirement often reaches 5 kg nitrogen, 2 kg P2O5 for phosphorus and 6 kg K2O for potassium. The sulfur (S) requirements of Solanaceae are always higher than those of the other crops, reaching levels of 100 kg SO3/ha/year. In order to satisfy this immediate requirement for nutrients over a relatively short time frame, the rate, balance and timing of fertilization are the keys to success.
Solanaceae crops, like many other fruits and vegetables, do not tolerate chloride. Pepper and eggplant are sensitive to chloride while tomatoes are more tolerant to chloride. It is advisable to avoid the accumulation of chloride in covered production systems.
