Tessenderlo Kerley Publishes Groundbreaking Research on Thiosulfate Fertilizers in the Soil Science Society of America Journal

Dr. Zack Ogles

Phoenix, AZ –May 8, 2025 – Tessenderlo Kerley, a recognized leader in innovative crop nutrition, is pleased to announce the publication of a pivotal study in the Soil Science Society of America Journal, titled “Potential of Ammonium Thiosulfate and Potassium Thiosulfate to Inhibit Nitrification in Soils.”

This peer-reviewed research was co-authored by Lane A. Galloway of Auburn University and Dr. Zack Ogles, Manager of Agronomy at Tessenderlo Kerley. The study investigates the potential of thiosulfate-based fertilizers—specifically Thio-Sul® and KTS®—to inhibit soil nitrification, offering both agronomic and environmental benefits.

“The findings of this research represent a win-win for both growers and the environment,” said Dr. Ogles. “By protecting their nitrogen investment, growers can ensure more nutrients reach the crop, while also delivering sulfur—an essential macronutrient.”

Addressing Key Challenges in Modern Agriculture

With rising input costs and increasing regulatory pressures, growers are seeking nutrient solutions that are both efficient and sustainable. This study confirms that thiosulfates not only supply vital sulfur but also significantly reduce nitrogen loss by slowing the conversion of ammonium to nitrate in the soil.

Key Findings

  • Enhanced Fertilizer Efficiency: Thio-Sul and KTS act as nitrification inhibitors, improving nitrogen retention and uptake by crops.
  • Cost Savings: Improved nitrogen use efficiency can reduce the need for additional fertilizer applications.
  • Environmental Stewardship: Lower nitrate leaching helps protect groundwater resources.
  • Improved Crop Performance: Greater nitrogen availability supports stronger, more consistent yields.

Proven Solutions for Progressive Growers

Tessenderlo Kerley’s thiosulfate-based fertilizers are engineered to integrate seamlessly into existing fertility programs. By delivering both sulfur and nitrogen protection in a single application, these products help growers maximize return on investment while advancing sustainable farming practices.

As environmental stewardship becomes increasingly central to agricultural success, thiosulfates offer a practical, research-backed solution.
